The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is aware of two recent incidents involving commercial pesticide applicators approached by individuals claiming to be MDARD pesticide inspectors. In both incidents, the person impersonating an MDARD pesticide inspector gained access to the applicator’s vehicle, equipment, and records. Law enforcement has been notified of both incidents. To ensure similar incidents do not occur again, MDARD reminds applicators of the following:
- All pesticide inspectors are issued State or Michigan photo IDs, MDARD badges with unique badge numbers, and MDARD business cards with their name, title and contact information.
- Pesticide inspectors are trained to clearly identify themselves when contacting regulated stakeholders.
- Pesticide inspectors may be driving unmarked cars or cars with the State of Michigan door seals.
- If an inspector does not clearly identify themselves, or you wish to verify the inspector’s identity, call MDARD’s Customer Service Center at 800-292-3939 to confirm their employment status.
- If the person cannot confirm their status as an MDARD pesticide inspector, immediately contact local law enforcement and MDARD at 800-292-3939 to report the incident.
